A better, more positive Tumblr
This seems like a poor decision. Part of Tumblr’s appeal is that it’s pretty wide open on free expression. This decision removes an important part of that that seperates Tumblr most other social media sites.
The staff notes that their are plenty of sites on the rest of the internet for the content they are removing. While not an expert, I believe these sites tend to be highly commercial, poorly/currated, female unfriendly, and from my perspective, kind of gross. Tumblr offers something very rare: a higly acessible platform for curation. It’s full of diverse curators, some of whom are very careful and talented. Many of them blog because they love to, not because it’s profitable. This comes through in the quality and composition of their collections. By banning the content completely (rather than merely filtering it) I think Tumblr is making itself and the internet a poorer place. While there are spambot issues worth addressing, this seems like the wrong way to do that. This opinion is echoed throughout the numerous notes on this post.
I hope Tumblr will reconsider.
I like your insightful comment.
